Managua Monday & MOM
Oscar's brother, Alvaro, drove Scarleth, Leo, and I to Managua to do some errands and grab my mom from the airport. We went to the mall and grabbed lunch in the food court. Then we traveled into Masaya and Catarina looking for some trees that Linda needs for the garden, but no one had the ones we were looking for. My mom did enjoy seeing a few parts of the country she did not see during our January trip, so trip was not completely fruitless. We traveled back to Leon, and hit some heavy rain during the trip. I got mom setup in a room above me in the house I stay at and we got some stuff unpacked she had brought for me personally and to use in villages. We grabbed dinner at my favorite spot and she got to meet Viky and Reyna.

Sunday with Pedro and Family
Today was cool with dark skies all day, looking like it was going to rain, but never started...of course until 4 when we were meeting to drive out for Sunday night service. It started raining just as we got in the truck and picked up to pouring the whole drive out.
Pastor Pedro brought his wife and 3 daughters along, so we had a full truck with Scarleth, Leo, and I across the backseat, a 10-year old in my lap, and a 5-year old in Leo's. Pedro's wife, Maria had her 16-month daughter in her lap up front. It was a fun trip and all of his girls speak very good Spanish and English. There names are Paola, Rachael, and Laura.
We had a decent number of church members there with the weather like it was, about 40. Pastor Pedro made up for his not being able to come out Friday when Daniel called and told us that he had to be at a wedding, and could not come do worship for us in Candelaria. Pedro and his wife did a great job leading worship.
After worship I took about 15 kids into the pastors house to watch the DVD of David and Goliath. The pastor's girls joined us. Pedro spoke and Pastor Jose closed. Scarleth and I then ended the service letting everyone know how much we appreciated their hard work this week, and that we had reported it back to the Gables, and how proud it made us to see them working for the church. Pastor Jose told us they finished the land and fence down near the river, but we did not walk across the field/lake to see it.

Half Saturday Off
We slept in today after a tiring full Friday. Scarleth and I both did some work things from our own houses and then met at the office to use the phone and internet to catchup the Gables with our last few days. Oscar had his first school day again in 3 weeks.
He has been working over 10 hours a day from the Gable house/office this past Wed-Fri to get the dental container contacts lined up as well as all his accounting and other NewSong Admin work. We kid him that he never works, just because he never goes out, but he has really been getting on it this week, and works hard all the time for us, and his grad school. I guess we just miss having him around to joke with is all.
Scarleth, Leo, and I took the rest of the day off because we were all about shot after the week break/getting behind then catching as much of it up as possible in 3 days. We will use Monday as a workday as Scarleth has a follow-up meeting in Managua about the clinic. We will also pickup some things for the upcoming mission teams coming down, and price some things we are hoping to buy in June for the clinic and garden.
There is something else we have to do in Managua this Monday, but I can't really remember, must not be important...Oh yeah, MY MOM IS FLYING IN AT NOON AND SPENDING A FULL WEEK HERE WITH ME!

Youth Night is Back
Pastor Pedro called and let us know that he had another meeting in Leon that got planned for this afternoon and it would be later than we would be going out for baseball and youth group. Scarleth and I called Daniel to see if he would like to speak after leading worship, and he accepted.
We grabbed some snacks and soft drinks on our way out for the baseball kids to enjoy after practice for the ones that would help us clean up the piles of weeds, rocks, and dirt around the church and clinic where many church members had worked yesterday and would be working again today.
Leo ran about an hour and 15 minute baseball practice and then Scarleth and I explained to them about the help we needed from them. All 18, and some other kids that were just hanging out on the property did a wonderful job taking nearly 10 wheelbarrows full of brush out from around the buildings and trees.
The gardeners and some other church members planted over 100 plantain tree bulbs around the clinic and throughout the garden. Other church members got the area flat between the garden and clinic for a few trees and parking spots in the future. Still others worked to get posts in the ground a the back of the field near the river for a fence that will hopefully get done over the weekend for more planting.
Our youth event went great, we still had right at or a little over 100 young people there with our 2-week miss due to strike. We got Santa Matilde and La Isla there a little before 6 and had told Candelaria we were starting at 6 from now on, but no one really showed up until 7. We are hoping that by next time we can have people there by 6. Daniel led a great worship and did an excellent job speaking with such short notice.
Scarleth and I talked about today being probably our best full day we have seen out there in a long time, maybe ever. Just so many things happening with sports, church members getting work done-old and young-and another great youth event.

Candelaria, Santa Matilde, Chinadega
Pastor Pedro drove Scarleth, Leo, and I out today for baseball practice, some visiting, and a meeting. Scarleth shared a story with the baseball boys and Leo and Pedro started their practice. Scarleth went to visit the Mendoza sisters to help them with their current living situation and check on needs, while Alfredo, Ariel, and I cleaned up the bodega.
We then went to visit in Santa Matilde and Scarleth had her meeting in Chinadega with a lady about the paperwork and other things required for the medical dental clinic. I enjoyed getting to visit with a few of the youth girls at Santa Matilde and some younger children. Rosa and Junieth enjoyed seeing some other kids to play with too.
We came back to Candelaria with some time still left in baseball practice. Pedro, Walter, and some of the other older guys started a game with the oldest kids from the team and enjoyed a few innings of competitive scrimmage. It was fun to see the older guys out there playing so serious.

Great to be Back in Villages
We did our work from Leon this morning and left from the office a little after 12:00. We had a full truck with 2 men from my house joining us for the day along with Roger. Mike Saeli is an agricultural engineer from New York that is here with his wife working with Food for the Hungry. He and Roger are the main speakers in the meeting today that Scarleth will be hosting.
Our other guest is Mike Coberly from Washington state who is in Nicaragua working with NicaMade. He is involved with Rotary in Leon and is getting some pictures and seeing the things we are doing after Scarleth and Larry shared some of our needs at last weeks rotary meeting.
As soon as we got there, the boys were ready for baseball after a full week off. Leo got them started and Roger and the Mikes looked around the garden and clinic. Scarleth and I got things setup for the meeting and it started a little after 2:00.
I spent time visiting some families and youth members by bicycle in Candelaria and let them know that we would have our youth meeting this coming Friday at 6:00. Many of the kids thought it had been canceled from now on, after having to skip it 2 weeks due to traffic strike. All of them were excited that we will continue it this weekend.

Tuesday
The three of us did as much work as we could without transportation again today. We had a community meeting in Candelaria setup, mostly to discuss things about the garden. The rainy season is starting and we need to get things planted as soon as possible. There are some other projects of clearing land and building a fence that we want some of the church to work on as well.
We have moved this meeting until tomorrow and feel like we will get to have it. Oscar and I picked the truck up this afternoon around 4, so it is ready to go out tomorrow.
Excited to be able and go out tomorrow for the first time in a week. Still getting things done here, but Scarleth, Leo, and I are really missing the baseball boys and our other Candelaria friends. Administration and other Leon work is only fun for a couple days at most.

Monday
So we called this morning in hopes to get the truck and make a trip to get a bed full of seeds from Managua, but they have now pushed it back to maybe tomorrow afternoon. I guess more is wrong with the truck than we had originally thought.
All local transportation is back to normal, so we will see what options we have for the day, but we cannot do our Managua trip because the amount of seeds we need requires a truck.
Hoping to get out of Leon for some change of pace.
God Bless You all!

Sunday in Leon
Another day in Leon for us. Hoping to get the truck out tomorrow because Scarleth and I need to go to Managua and get some seeds and have things planted in the garden soon before the rain starts.
The strike is over, but being a Sunday the busses are on a restricted schedule. There are taxis buzzing all over Leon. By tomorrow the busses, trucks, and everything else should be back to normal.
We have spent the day resting and hoping to use Monday and Tuesday as workdays because Friday-Sunday have felt like days off with us stuck here.

Still No Truck
The guys at the garage have now told us that we will be truckless until at least Monday morning. The strike ended this afternoon, so busses and taxis should be on the road again Monday.
I went out for the afternoon with Juan Diego and some of his friends and their families out above Telica for a barbeque. We stayed out there until dark and then came back to see Larry off.
Larry flies out tomorrow, but wants to go ahead and get to Managua tonight just to be sure there are no traffic issues.

Friday Stuck in Leon
The truck is still being looked at and they say we might get it back tomorrow. For today we are confined to Leon because the strike is still on. Hoping for better news on the truck and the strike soon.

Thursday Short Trip Out
Larry and Scarleth got a truck full of plantain bulbs and stems, in Leon for planting around the dental clinic and garden in Candelaria. Oscar and I worked from the Gables until we left for Candelaria around 1. Roger came with us to talk with garden people about planting the plantains and oversee other things at the garden. Leo had plans for baseball practice and Scarleth and Larry had plans to meet a lady in Chinadega about the water tank for the dental clinic.
As we got to the entrance of Chichigapla the truck started making some high pitched awful noise. We continued to the church and unloaded the plantains. We then turned around and traveled back to Leon. We needed to get the truck in to the shop before 5, and the sooner the better.
They will check it tonight and in the morning, and we will try and plan our day tomorrow once we know the truck status.
